This workshop will provide a forum to discuss the lessons learned from a decade of experience with biofuels in the US and their implications for transitioning to a more sustainable bioeconomy. It will include three sessions that involve panel presentations about the current state of knowledge followed by facilitated discussion with the workshop participants to highlight areas of consensus and remaining controversies and to define a research agenda to move forward in the future.  The sessions will focus on the following three topics:

1.     The role of land in meeting deep decarbonization targets

2.     Emerging applications and conversion technologies and barriers

3.     Effectiveness of existing policies in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions via the bioeconomy and lessons for the future.
