SUMMARY:Webinar on new\, national Shade Map
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar introducing and demonstrating the newly launched Shade Map\, now available through American Forests’ Tree Equity Score platform. This mapping tool shows where shade exists — and where it doesn’t — in 101 of the largest urbanized areas in the United States\, covering more than 360 cities and towns. The webinar will include a live demonstration of the shade mapping feature\, the Tree Equity Score Analyzer\, and data stories from Austin\, Detroit\, and Phoenix. \nWhy attend: Learn how this data is essential for your heat planning\, policy\, and advocacy work. \nWhen: Thursday\, June 5\, 2025\, at 12:00 PM Pacific Time \nWhere: Register here to receive the Zoom link to attend. \nPresented by: UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation and American Forests\, with funding from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. \nAbout the Tree Equity Score Shade Map  \nWe are excited to publicly launch our products on June 2\, 2025. UCLA’s state-of-the-art shade data is available as a mapped feature in American Forests’ Tree Equity Score for 360+ cities in the U.S. Discover how much shade is available by Census block group at three different times of the day\, and see what share of shade is cast by trees versus buildings. We also added high-resolution shade data to three Tree Equity Score Analyzers — a local mapping tool that allows parcel-level exploration for certain cities. Now\, for these three areas — Austin\, TX; Detroit\, MI; and Maricopa County\, AZ — users can view shade at the parcel level. It allows users in these three locations to plan to improve shade equity by exploring tree equity data\, assessing shade distribution\, developing scenarios\, and measuring the impacts of trees at a parcel level. For Austin\, Detroit\, and Phoenix\, our data stories take a deep dive into shade. We explored the role of shade in heat equity planning in three immersive stories as examples of how the tool can be useful.

SUMMARY:Luskin Lecture: Mary Nichols’ Bold Roadmap to Cleaner Transportation
DESCRIPTION:Register \nEnvironmentalist Mary Nichols helped lead California’s internationally recognized efforts to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions during four terms as chair of the California Air Resources Board. Her legacy includes support for policies to cut emissions from the transportation sector — the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the state and nation. Learn from Nichols’ deep experience during this conversation about how government leaders should take bold\, equity-focused action. Nichols will be joined by UCLA transportation equity scholar Tierra Bills and Colleen Callahan\, the co-executive director of the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation. \nNichols has held leadership roles with environmental agencies at the national level\, and TIME magazine has included her among the world’s 100 most influential people. She is currently distinguished counsel at the UCLA School of Law and the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment. Nichols was inaugural director of UCLA’s Institute of Environment and Sustainability and is a former advisory board member at the Luskin Center for Innovation. \nBills holds a joint faculty appointment at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs and the Samueli School of Engineering. SUMMARY:Urban Water Conservation in a Drought
DESCRIPTION:Register\nHosted by the UCLA Water Resources Group. \nDuring the last drought (2011 -2017)\, California had to manage through emergency regulation which includes conservation mandates. Since then\, new legislation was signed to “Make Conservation a Way of Life” for all water users\, improving the efficiency of water use\, and using less of it permanently. \nThe 2020-2021 California Drought Monitor Map above shows California is in exceptional drought\, due to low precipitation\, record breaking high temperatures\, little snow\, high evaporation and prior droughts. \nWe have brought together a great panel of experts to discuss: \n\nHow has urban water conservation evolved since the 2018 Water Conservation Legislation passed?\nWhat are we doing differently now from the last drought?\nWhat do we need to know about water use and water users to become more prepared for longer and/or more extreme droughts?\nWhat can water experts contribute to make Conservation a Way of Life?\nHow do the burdens and benefits of conservation fall? Fairly\, or not?\n\n\nOUR PANEL: \nSonali Abraham\, Research Associate\, The Pacific Institute. \nUCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability D. Env. \nEduardo De La Riva\, Maywood City Council Member \nErik Porse\, Research Engineer in the Office of Water Programs\, CSU Sacramento\, \nAssistant Adjunct Professor at UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability \nTracy Quinn\, Director\, NRDC California Urban Water Policy\, Healthy People & Thriving Communities Program; \nMember\, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California \nPanel Moderator \nMadelyn Glickfeld\, Co-Director\, UCLA Water Resources Center

SUMMARY:High Impact Tea with Mary Nichols - COP26\, Climate Regulation & Beyond: How Business Leaders can Become Effective Climate Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Register\nHosted by UCLA Impact@Anderson  \nHigh Impact Tea featuring Mary Nichols\, Distinguished Counsel at UCLA Law\, Former Chairwoman of the California Air Resources Board\, in conversation with Dr. Magali Delmas\, Professor of Management at the Anderson School of Management and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability \nWith COP26 underway and almost to its conclusion\, we wanted to feature Dr. Mary Nichols\, whose work spans the gamut of environmental law and policy. Her long tenure working in this field through four gubernatorial administrations in California has made her a model of conversation\, collaboration\, and outcomes\, managing to balance the interests of utilities companies\, communities\, activists\, policy-makers\, financiers\, and the auto\, oil and gas industries without getting co-opted. This High Impact Tea will explore what will come next in environmental regulations\, how young graduates can have an environmental impact\, and how each of us can influence corporations to be truly green. Dr. Nichols will be in conversation with Maggie Delmas\, Professor of Management at the Anderson School of Management and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA and Faculty Director of the Center for Impact at Anderson. \nThe High Impact Tea is a quarterly speaker series that features social impact industry leaders sharing stories about their successes\, and lessons learned in their careers. The social and educational event is open to faculty\, students\, staff and alumni across UCLA\, as well as the broader social impact community. It is designed to provide a forum for conversation and exchange of ideas among people committed to creating social\, environmental and economic impact around the world.

SUMMARY:Climate Adaptation Research Symposium 2020: Measuring and Addressing Societal Impacts
DESCRIPTION:View recordings from the symposium\nJoin us at this first-of-its-kind\, national symposium! The event will feature social science research that measures the scale and scope of climate impacts\, as well as how to address those impacts through adaptive markets\, public policies\, and planning. Learn more on the event webpage.\n\n\nAs global temperatures rise\, climate change is causing far-reaching impacts. Communities continue to experience extreme heat waves\, destructive wildfires\, and devastating floods and storms. Vulnerable and low-income populations feel these impacts the most. \nClimate change presents an unprecedented threat—however\, researchers are making progress to estimate the impacts of climate change on many aspects of society—health\, safety\, and wellbeing; migration; economic outputs and productivity—and to offer potential solutions. This arena of research offers a path forward to creating resilient communities and a society that can respond to rapidly changing environmental conditions. \nThis full-day symposium will highlight recent research measuring the impacts of climate change\, particularly on vulnerable populations and communities. The event will also include a parallel focus on strategies to address these impacts. It will foster cross-disciplinary dialogue between researchers and ultimately serve to improve our collective understanding of the climate adaptation research landscape; existing gaps; and how researchers can assist in informing adaptation and resiliency policies that are urgently needed. \nThe UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation acknowledges the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of the Los Angeles basin and UCLA is grateful to be in service to the indigenous peoples of this area. \nThank you to our event sponsors\n \nThank you to our event partners
