SUMMARY:Brown to Green: Turning Los Angeles' Brown Power Infrastructure Green through a Feed-in Tariff
DESCRIPTION:While the City of Los Angeles stumbles toward greening it’s power infrastructure with renewable sources\, a proven method of quickly and affordably reaching this goal has been analyzed for use in Southern California; this method is a feed-in-tariff (FiT).\nA proven concept in Germany\, Spain and now Italy\, feed-in-tariffs are a mechanism for a power utility company\, such as the LADWP\, to activate the public and private sector to install renewables in excess of their own power needs\, selling the balance of power back to the utility. To make the adoption of a FiT even easier here in Los Angeles\, Professor JR DeShazo of UCLA’s Luskin School for Innovation\, has created a customized FiT for the City of Los Angeles. His study clearly shows that a well design FiT program would jump start the greening of LA’s power grid\, would have limited near term costs\, and would provide long term savings to the City. \nNow all that remains is for leaders of the City of Los Angeles to have the courage to implement a FiT. \nOur panel will discuss the general benefits of feed-in-tariffs\, the specific plan to implement a FiT through the LADWP\, the environmental benefits of distributed power generation\, and the architectural implications of this shift from brown to green. \nPANEL FRAMER:\nStuart Magruder\, AIA LEED | Studio Nova A Architects\, Inc. \nPANELISTS:\nAngie Brooks\, AIA | Pugh + Scarpa Architects\nRhonda S. Mills | Center for Energy Efficiency & Renewable Technologies\nJ.R. DeShazo | UCLA’s Luskin School For Innovation \nMODERATOR:\nCraig Lewis | FiT Coalition

SUMMARY:L.A. Region Green Economy Think-Tank Day
DESCRIPTION:THE GREEN ECONOMY THINK-TANK DAY will convene leaders and decision makers from various private and public sectors to build a more green and sustainable Los Angeles economy. The Luskin Center will help facilitate a break-out session that will help unite scholarship with society to advance the Los Angeles region a clean tech capital. The Luskin Center will also release its recent Clean Technology in Los Angeles report and provide its findings to key stakeholders. UCLA School of Public Affairs students Kristina Bedrossian\, Sarah Locher\, Frank Lopez and Matthew O’Keef have compiled a report on L.A.’s current status as a city in the clean technology industry. Comparing Los Angeles to other leading cities\, the authors make a number of astute observations about LA’s strengths and weaknesses and offer a number of key suggestions for how LA can change its policies to become the nation’s leader in “green” technology. SUMMARY:TransportationCamp Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:UCLA Hosts\n Meeting of Transportation Professionals and Technologists \n Register Now for TransportationCamp Los Angeles 2015 \n When:\n Saturday\,October 3rd\n Where:\n UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs\n Registration:\n $25 at Eventbrite\n More Info: UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies\n 2015 is an exciting time for\n transportation innovation in Los Angeles.  We have a rapidly-expanding\n frequent transit and bicycle network.  Technological innovation has\n already brought us reliable point-to-point mobility for passengers\, real-time\n transit arrival and traffic incident information\, and even “feeding the\n meter” from a phone.\n We see more promise on the horizon as\n local governments in the Los Angeles area continue to innovate\n mobility.  The City of Los Angeles and Google currently share traffic\n information\, and Google’s Waze recently announced a pilot program to allow\n app users to ride with each other.  Cities and Metro will soon launch\n bikeshare on the westside and in downtown\, which promises to augment the\n transit network and and encourage more people to try our expanding bicycle\n network.  The City of Los Angeles’s Taxicab Commission is restructuring\n regulations to enable innovation in a long-stagnant industry.\n We also have innovative plans that seek\n to make the transportation system safer and more reliable for those who\n aren’t in the driver’s seat while striving to lessen the impacts that traffic\n congestion\, auto-dependence\, and emissions have on public health and quality\n of life for all Los Angelenos.\n While\n the focus of transportation innovation is often on technology\, it’s people\n who are envisioning\, developing and implementing this technology.  TransportationCamp brings\n together thinkers and doers from the intersection of transportation and\n technology:  transportation professionals\, technologists\, and\n enthusiasts.  As an unconference\, the session topics and activities are\n proposed by the attendees; every attendee is a participant in shaping and\n leading the event.\n Come\n to TransportationCamp Los Angeles 2015 if\n you’re a technologist who aspires to analyze and visualize public open data\n or build apps that connect people with mobility options.  Come if you’re\n a transportation professional with a thorough awareness of the multimodal\n transportation system’s shortcomings and a desire to work collaboratively and\n creatively to improve it.\n We can be low-tech while embracing\n high-tech.  Technologists and transportation professionals have been\n tweeting at each other\, but it’s also important for people to come together\n in the same room to explore creative new approaches to addressing Los\n Angeles’s transportation issues. \n Register now\n    \n
