SUMMARY:Author Talk: Matt Kahn on "CLIMATOPOLIS: How Cities will Thrive in the Hotter Future"
DESCRIPTION:Over the next 20 years\, hundreds of millions of people will move to cities\, demanding the economic opportunities and material comforts of urban life: air conditioning\, personal computers\, rich diets\, cars\, cell phones. In 1950\, only 30 percent of the world’s population lived in urban areas; by 2030\, that figure will rise to 60 percent. While cities have long propelled economic growth and brought prosperity to their residents\, how will they fare as populations increase\, temperatures rise\, natural disasters threaten\, and resources grow scarce? UCLA Luskin Scholar and professor at the School of Public Affairs Matthew Kahn\, author of Climatopolis: How Our Cities Will Thrive in the Hotter Future\, visits Zócalo to explain how we can best prepare for the urban future. Thanks to our media sponsor: KCRWFor more information visit: http://zocalopublicsquare.org/upcoming.php?event_id=441

SUMMARY:Nanotechnology VI Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join leading researchers in nanotechnology and nanomaterials manufacturers at the UCLA California NanoSystems Institute for this exciting event on controlling environmental and workplace hazards.\nThis one-day workshop\, on Thursday\, October 13\, is sponsored by the California Department of Toxic Substance Control and UCLA. Leading scientists will discuss the latest strategies in protecting workers in the research\, development and manufacturing of nanomaterials\, and define further research and developmental needs relating to occupational safety and health. \nNanotechnology is an expanding field that has the potential to create many new materials and products with a huge range of applications. SUMMARY:Brown to Green: Turning Los Angeles' Brown Power Infrastructure Green through a Feed-in Tariff
DESCRIPTION:While the City of Los Angeles stumbles toward greening it’s power infrastructure with renewable sources\, a proven method of quickly and affordably reaching this goal has been analyzed for use in Southern California; this method is a feed-in-tariff (FiT).\nA proven concept in Germany\, Spain and now Italy\, feed-in-tariffs are a mechanism for a power utility company\, such as the LADWP\, to activate the public and private sector to install renewables in excess of their own power needs\, selling the balance of power back to the utility. To make the adoption of a FiT even easier here in Los Angeles\, Professor JR DeShazo of UCLA’s Luskin School for Innovation\, has created a customized FiT for the City of Los Angeles. His study clearly shows that a well design FiT program would jump start the greening of LA’s power grid\, would have limited near term costs\, and would provide long term savings to the City. \nNow all that remains is for leaders of the City of Los Angeles to have the courage to implement a FiT. \nOur panel will discuss the general benefits of feed-in-tariffs\, the specific plan to implement a FiT through the LADWP\, the environmental benefits of distributed power generation\, and the architectural implications of this shift from brown to green. \nPANEL FRAMER:\nStuart Magruder\, AIA LEED | Studio Nova A Architects\, Inc. \nPANELISTS:\nAngie Brooks\, AIA | Pugh + Scarpa Architects\nRhonda S. Mills | Center for Energy Efficiency & Renewable Technologies\nJ.R. DeShazo | UCLA’s Luskin School For Innovation \nMODERATOR:\nCraig Lewis | FiT Coalition

SUMMARY:L.A. Region Green Economy Think-Tank Day
DESCRIPTION:THE GREEN ECONOMY THINK-TANK DAY will convene leaders and decision makers from various private and public sectors to build a more green and sustainable Los Angeles economy. The Luskin Center will help facilitate a break-out session that will help unite scholarship with society to advance the Los Angeles region a clean tech capital. The Luskin Center will also release its recent Clean Technology in Los Angeles report and provide its findings to key stakeholders. UCLA School of Public Affairs students Kristina Bedrossian\, Sarah Locher\, Frank Lopez and Matthew O’Keef have compiled a report on L.A.’s current status as a city in the clean technology industry. Comparing Los Angeles to other leading cities\, the authors make a number of astute observations about LA’s strengths and weaknesses and offer a number of key suggestions for how LA can change its policies to become the nation’s leader in “green” technology.
