SUMMARY:IoES/Luskin Lunch Research Seminar - Aradhna Tripati
DESCRIPTION:Glacial Climate   \n Aradhna Tripati\, Assistant Professor\n University of California\, Los Angeles\n Departments of Earth and Space Sciences & Atmospheric and\n Oceanic Sciences\, Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics \n    \nMy research group uses\nthe sedimentary record to address fundamental questions about the dynamics of\nclimate change\, both past and future. We work on the development and\napplication of novel geochemical tools to document and understand the evolution\nof temperature\, ice volume\, and pH. The principal aim of our research is to\nunderstand the role of the carbon cycle in changing seawater chemistry and\nclimate. \nOur research is\nfocused on applying innovative experimental approaches in order to use the\ngeologic record as a rich laboratory for the study of climate processes. The\nprimary tools we use include the new ‘clumped isotope’ thermometer\, and the\nelemental composition of carbonates. We also integrate geochemical measurements\nwith field-based observations\, sedimentologic and micropaleontologic data\, and\nmodels. \nResearch topics we are\ncurrently pursuing include studying: (1) changes in tropical and subtropical\nclimate from the Last Glacial Maximum to the present\, (2) calcification and\ndiagenetic processes that govern isotopic and elemental distributions in\ncarbonate minerals\, (3) polar climate stability during past warm intervals in\nEarth’s history\, (4) the evolution of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and its\nconsequences on oceanic pH\, and (5) the history of the major cationic\ncomposition of seawater.
