Stokes is the Anton Vonk Associate Professor of Environmental Politics at UC Santa Barbara and the author of The Carbon Wave: A Story of Democracy\, Parenthood\, and the Race to Protect Our Planet. She has championed climate policy in the United States at all levels of government and was selected for Time Magazine’s Time100 Next list and Business Insider’s top 30 global climate leaders. Trained at MIT\, Columbia\, and the University of Toronto\, Stokes has been published in top scholarly journals\, as well as The New York Times\, Washington Post\, and other popular media outlets. A recipient of a Harvard University Radcliffe Fellowship\, she is also the author of the award-winning Short Circuiting Policy\, which was listed as one of the top five climate books in 2020 by The New York Times. She is also a co-host of the climate podcast “A Matter of Degrees.”

DESCRIPTION:Join the Office of Water Programs on November 6 for a virtual seminar with Dr. Gregory Pierce\, Senior Director of the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation\, on the role water systems played in the 2025 Los Angeles fires.\nWhat to Expect\nDr. Pierce will also share ongoing research and policy work from the UCLA-UCANR Urban Water Supply + Fire Working Group including:\n\n\nPublic narratives and perceptions of water systems’ firefighting capacity\nPractical\, cost-realistic engineering and collaborative options for water systems to fight both everyday fires and wildfires\nHow state oversight shapes the way water systems approach wildfire response\n\n\nDate: Friday\, November 6\, 2026Time: 12pm-1pmLocation: Virtual (via Zoom)—Link to virtual seminar to be sent upon RSVPHosted by: Office of Water Programs\, California State University\, Sacramento \nRegister on Zoom to receive the link to join.\n\nAbout the Speaker\n \nDr. Gregory Pierce is the senior director of the University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, Luskin Center for Innovation\, the director of the Human Right to Water Solutions Lab\, and the director of the UCLA Water Resources Group within the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. He serves as an associate faculty member in the Department of Urban Planning. In early 2025\, he launched a Water System-Wildfire Working Group with UCLA and UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (UCANR) colleagues. The working group has held 4 in-person workshops\, engaged extensively in policy conversations\, and produced 13 reports and journal articles on emerging issues. He earned his BA\, MA\, and PhD from UCLA.
