Welcome Jean Claude, our new data scientist and associate project manager

The UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation (LCI) is thrilled to welcome Jean Claude Iradukunda as a Data Scientist and Associate Project Manager.
In this role, Jean Claude will develop, manage, and execute LCI’s Urban Heat Research projects that bridge data science with policy and planning to help communities nationwide adapt to rising temperatures.
He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from UC Riverside, where he actively contributed to the Science to Policy program.
We asked Jean Claude a few questions to learn more about his journey and vision for his work at LCI.
Why is environmental policy important to you?
Environmental policy is important because people’s quality of life is directly tied to our environment. The decisions we make today — such as increasing green spaces to improve air quality and provide shade or conserving water resources — have lasting impacts on community health and wellbeing.
How did you first get interested in environmental policy?
I became interested in environmental policy during graduate school when I recognized how data-driven research could inform practical solutions to environmental problems. I was especially drawn to using both analytical and communication skills to make research findings clear and actionable for decision-makers.
What are you most looking forward to in this role?
I look forward to using data to tell meaningful stories and collaborating with stakeholders in government, nonprofits, and community organizations to drive action.
What drew you to UCLA and the Luskin Center for Innovation?
The UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation offers a unique opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and engage with community members to ensure that the ongoing research addresses the pressing challenges people face.
What are a few things people should know about you?
I enjoy engaging with people from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds to learn and gain new perspectives. I’m also a data enthusiast, passionate about transforming numbers into valuable information.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, reading, exploring, and visiting new places.
