Chair and Director of the UCLA Institute of the Environment. He is also a
Professor of Geography and Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at
UCLA.
His research focuses on climate change,
its causes and its impact on the environment and society. He works on climate
variability and environmental change using observational and other records. He
has worked on climate and environmental change issues in North America, Eurasia
and Africa. A particular focus of his work has been on water resources in
western North America and the global semi-arid regions. He is known for work on
the concept of the ‘Perfect Drought’. He also conducts research on issues such as
California coastal marshes and the impact of rising sea levels. His work has
been supported by the Royal Society of Canada, NSERC, NSF, EPA, DOIÂ and
